Where sound took a different shape

The path to an invention

Ehrlund Microphones was founded in 2005 by inventor and sound visionary Göran Ehrlund, in the small village of Stora Skedvi, Dalarna, Sweden. For Göran, sound has never been just a profession—it has been a lifelong calling.

With more than four decades of experience as a sound and recording engineer, and decades spent developing microphones for some of the world’s most respected manufacturers, Göran’s understanding of sound is both deeply technical and profoundly musical. He has always listened first—then built what was missing.

That instinct showed itself early. At just twelve years old, Göran built his first microphone. Around the same time, he also built a ukulele in woodworking class—and later experimented by fitting it with a loudspeaker to explore how sound could be captured and reproduced. It was a small experiment, but it revealed a mindset that would never let go of curiosity. Since the early 1970s, Göran has designed tube compressors, microphones, and custom tape recorders for renowned studios and engineers around the world—often quietly, always meticulously.

In the 1970s, Göran built his own recording studio in Eskilstuna, Sweden, where he also began producing exponential horns for loudspeakers. It was there, in the 1980s, that a pivotal discovery took shape. While listening, experimenting, and refining, Göran realized that the traditional circular membrane was not ideal. Instead, he found that a triangular membrane dramatically reduced self-resonance, improved airflow, and captured sound with an honesty and naturalness he had been searching for his entire life.

That discovery became the foundation of Ehrlund Microphones.

The sound found its place

In 2007, Ehrlund Microphones entered a collaboration with Research Electronics in Siljansnäs, Sweden—specialists in ultra-low-noise electronics since 1987. Together, Göran’s uncompromising pursuit of natural sound was paired with exceptionally refined electronic design, resulting in microphones of remarkable transparency, sensitivity, and realism.

The response from the professional audio community was immediate and heartfelt. Producers, engineers, and musicians recognized something rare—microphones that didn’t impose themselves, but simply revealed the truth of the performance. Ehrlund microphones quickly found their way into studios around the world, trusted by artists and engineers who value honesty over hype.

In January 2026, Göran brought Ehrlund Microphones fully back into the family. Today, the company is 100% owned and led by Göran and his sons, Per and Johan Ehrlund. A new, state-of-the-art factory and advanced electronics laboratory mark the beginning of a new chapter—rooted in tradition, driven by innovation.

Together with a carefully selected team of engineers and developers, the Ehrlund family has introduced an entirely new electronic circuit, further refined the triangular capsule, and redesigned airflow paths—pushing clarity, detail, and brilliance even further, while remaining true to Göran’s original vision.

And Göran? He is still there—listening, inventing, refining. Every Ehrlund microphone is personally optimized for its purpose, shaped by decades of experience and an unwavering respect for sound as it truly is.
